The new album of one of the most intriguing and original Black Metal bands in Poland. Characteristic points of NON OPUS DEI’s sound are closed in such words as avantgarde, diabolicality, rituality, magic and breaking of stereotypes and boundaries. On “The Quintessence” NON OPUS DEI continues their trip through undiscovered or known to not numerous worlds full of symbols, primal instincts, archetypes and oppositions. Love and hate, creation and destruction, ugliness and beauty, life and death... It’s the fourth time (according to four full-length albums of the band) that NON OPUS DEI prooves how creative they are and how far their style is able to progress more and more within Black Metal genre.

Nuevo trabajo de esta banda polaca de Avantgarde Black metal donde a lo largo de 13 temas exploran diferentes terrenos y que los ha llevado a crear un excelente trabajo cargado de oscuras melodías y riffs muy trabajados, donde alternan partes rápidas más proximas al Black metal polaco y otras donde la banda se deja llevar por un toque más moderno y en las que dan más importancia a los arreglos y la atmosfera y que recuerdan en parte a las composiciones de SAMAEL o los propios ARCTURUS; por otra parte, la banda en ocasiones también toca algo la zona del death metal y en ese momento quizás me vienen a la cabeza sus compatriotas BEHEMOTH, pero esto en menor medida, ya que la banda hace más uso de la combinación del Black metal con los elementos Dark Metal; la producción no está mal y la verdad es que es un trabajo que quizás necesite de unas cuantas escuchas para ser digerido realmente, pero os aseguro que cuando le cojais el gustillo, os gustará bastante.

This album, the fourth official full length and sixth release of this Polish Black Metal band, seems to represent, as the title implies, the fifth essence of this quartet's creativity, with a magnificent, complex, somewhat ritualistic and obscure Black Metal opus. The music moves here mostly through mid to fast, intricate structures, where the heavy Death/Black Metal inspired riffs drive the music over a complex and excellently executed drum work, element that indisputably contributes with a progressive feeling, increasing the yet original album's sound… The possessed grim vocalizations of Klimorh are highly remarkable, delivering a really infernal and harsh style, complemented by occasional hate-fuelled clean vocals, sounding, at the rawer passages, like a sort of blend between Maniac (ex-Mayhem) and Vorph (Samael) respective and distinctive manners. All these elements are conjugated and adorned by interesting musical arranges including some medieval, arcane sounding flute melodies, just listen to the enigmatic "Oczy Tej Kobiety" where the mentioned flute melodies are mixed with infernal blackish vocalizations and some ad-hoc sonic effects resulting in a incredibly obscure and occultist piece of black art, or the closing track "Gdy Faun Poszedł Na Wojnę...", a cathartic and tribal, yet obscure composition, which perfectly closes this album… A detail that caught my attention, is the ninth track, "Das Ist Krieg", a completely grim and ripping traditional sounding Black Metal piece in the crudest early nineties Scandinavian vein, even reminding me of the early sound of Gorgoroth… this track, even when is a killer one, sounds a little out of place to me, but it's nothing you can't get used to after a couple of listenings… The whole concept behind "The Quintessence" deals with dark symbolisms, occultism and philosophy treated in a really intelligent way (just check the track list titles), perfectly complementing the also intelligently composed music… The style Non Opus Dei delivers here, even when can still be labelled as Black Metal, definitely stands out from the crowd with their original, progressive, yet obscure as hell proposal… If you're looking for something fresh within the Black Metal parameters, you should definitely check this one out… (AP)

I must admit, this album took a while to grow on me. At first,
it went by, feeling dreary and colorless. But after further
listening, I realized that's not the case. Darkness has many
hues, and what I mistook for dreariness turned out to be subtle,
varied, and, yes, colorful.
Non Opus Dei has penned one of the darkest records I've heard in
a long time; "doomy blackened death metal" could be
one description. The Quintessence is a 46-minute tunnel of
hushed whispers, alien rasps, and discordant harmonies dripping
down the walls. Guitars, panned left and right, conjure up
ringing dissonance that feels like raking knuckles across rocks.
Gonzo from grinders Third Degree is on drums, and he finely
balances grooves, fills, and blastbeats. This is a deep,
well-written record that requires investment, but pays off
accordingly.

NON OPUS DEI już od czasu "Yfel" raczy nas swoim
bezkompromisowym, aczkolwiek bardzo przemyślanym i niekiedy dość
eksperymentalnym black metalem i nic dziwnego, że nowe dzieło
"The Quintessence" otrzymuje u mnie wysoką notę.
Kolejne wydawnictwo olsztynian, mimo tego że posiada
beznadziejną okładkę, przynosi dawkę muzyki najwyższych lotów,
a to w sumie jest najważniejsze. NON OPUS DEI potrafią kreować
dźwięki, które składają się niekiedy dość zaskakująco,
ale o dziwo bardzo logicznie, przez co bezkompromisowy black
metal nabiera innego wymiaru, wyrywając się z objęć sztampy
i ślepej nienawiści, która prowadzi tzw. "fru"
black w nicość... Jako, że sam nie bardzo rozumiem to, co
napisałem powyżej, ujmę to nieco inaczej :-). Podoba mi się
w muzyce NON OPUS DEI to, że potrafią oni bez zbytniej
przesady wpleść w swój metal elementy, które wydawać by się
mogło, że nie powinny pasować. Potrafią tworzyć dźwięki,
które na pierwszy rzut oka nie powinny się znaleźć na krążku,
a jednak w połączeniu z całością muzyki "The
Quintessence" są jak najbardziej na miejscu. I
niekoniecznie mówię tutaj o instrumentach spoza kanonu, bo
chociaż one występują tutaj kilka razy, to bardziej mi chodzi
o fale wyłaniające się wprost z gitarowych strun, fale, które
wcale nie są przypisane black metalowi, a jednak spełniają się
w nim bardzo dobrze. Najlepsze jednak w "The
Quinressence" jest to, że wcale tak od razu tego nie słychać.
Na płytę składa się 13 utworów (ponad trzy kwadranse), z których
część posiada teksty w języku polskim, za co każdy zespół
zawsze chwalę :-). Do trzech utworów NON OPUS DEI nakręcił
teledyski, które są do ściągnięcia na stronie wydawcy. Czy
się one Wam podobają - ocenicie sami. Czy zrozumiecie
przesycenie symboliką, to już inna sprawa, ja się na ten
temat po prostu nie wypowiem... W każdym razie, "The
Quintessence" polecam wszystkim, nie tylko black

Non Opus Dei is pure black metal with extrremely dark riffs and
interesting arrangements that set them apart from all the bands
in the style. The band is extremely violent but at the same time
their riffs create that kind of melody that brings sorrow and
darkness to the listener´s mind. THere are blast beats and fast
drums patterns all over the place here giving that essential
black metal feature to this recording. And we have here also
plnty of agonic vocals that turn everything into more extreme
compositions. The recording has a raw and direct sound that
brings to mind early black metal bands but with a louder sound
that adds extra violence points to the music.

Przyznam szczerze bez picia…yyy bicia, że jest to w
zasadzie mój pierwszy bliski kontakt z muzyką NOD. Może
zostanę za to zmieszany z błotem, ale cóż ja biedny mogę na
to poradzić, tak wyszło. Słyszałem o ich muzyce od
znajomych, poczytałem parę recenzji, no i w końcu otrzymałem
z Pagan Rec. promo najnowszego materiału olsztynian "The
Quintessence". No i trochę mnie zaskoczyło to co usłyszałem.
Wszyscy mi tu mówili black metal, w recenzjach black metal, a
tu nie dokońca mamy do czynienia z black metalem. Owszem można
pewne jego elementy odnaleźć w niektórych utworach, jak np.
"Gdy Imperium Upada", "Das Ist Krieg", czy
"A Beauty Made Of Steel", ale ciężko jest przypisać
to co obecnie tworzą olsztynianie akurat do tego gatunku. No może
jedynym wyraźnym elementem wskazującym na powiązania NOD z
czarcią sztuką jest skrzekliwy wokal Klimora. Co mnie tutaj
zaskoczyło? Przede wszystkim nieszablonowe podejście do
muzyki, która jest co tu dużo mówić niesamowicie
inteligentna. NOD stworzyło materiał trudny w odbiorze, przesiąknięty
diabolicznym klimatem, wprowadzający słuchacza w trans, z którego
trudno wyjść. "The Quintessence" jest dokładnie
przemyślany, tutaj każdy dźwięk zna swoje miejsce. Nic nie
dzieje się przypadkowo, wszystko jest idealnie zaplanowane i
wykonane. Zespół ciągle szuka swojego stylu i chyba jest już
coraz bliżej tego celu, gdyż wydaje mi się, że jest to w tym
momencie jeden z najbardziej oryginalnych zespołów w naszym
kraju, który ciężko przyrównać do jakiejkolwiek innej
kapeli. W każdym bądź razie jest to zespół, który stworzył
nietuzinkowy materiał, i który na pewno zapisze się dużymi
literami w historii polskiego ekstremalnego metalu. Tego
olsztynianom życzę.

Laut einiger Geheimtipps haben Pagan Records einige interessante
Pferde in ihrem Stall, wozu meiner Ansicht nach die einheimische
Black Metal Truppe NON OPUS DEI zweifellos hinzugezählt werden
kann. Viele ach so elitäre Bands dieses Sektors versuchen mittels
Kopieren alter Spielarten ein selten erreichtes Flair wieder
aufleben zu lassen, was sich in einem Großteil der Fälle als
Tritt ins Fettnäpfchen erweist. So klingt es aufmunternd, dass
sich die vier Polen deutlich mehr im modernen, experimentellen
Bereich bewegen, dessen Potenzial noch nicht vollkommen ausgeschöpft
ist.
Reichlich druckvoll und im mittleren Tempobereich angesiedelt
schraubt sich der erste Song „ 21 XII 2004“ aus den
Boxen. Trotz der glasklaren Produktion und dem sparsamen Einsatz
zusätzlicher musikalischer Mittel außerhalb der typischen Metal
Ausrüstung, vermag die Scheibe größtenteils eine mystische,
fast verwirrende Atmosphäre zu erzeugen. Bekräftigt wird das
Ganze durch das zugegeben etwas abgekaute lyrische Themenfeld des
Kosmos, der Spiritualität und der Quintessenz. Die gesamte
geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre voller dunkler Energien auf „The
Quintessence“ steht im Kontrast zur ziemlich wuchtigen äußeren
Erscheinung der Scheibe.
Wahrscheinlich gerade aufgrund der hohen technischen Fähigkeiten
aller Bandmitglieder, die auf jenem Werk zweifellos reichhaltig
zur Schau gestellt werden, verliere ich hin und wieder mal den
Faden und Alles wirkt etwas überladen. Dieser kleine Störfaktor
jedoch, der leider etwas zu oft zum Vorschein kommt um ihn ganz außen
vor zu lassen, wird durch die zumindest streckenweise
bemerkenswerte Abwechslung ein wenig ausgebügelt. Auch wenn mich
die Scheibe trotz der druckvollen Abmischung auch gefühlstechnisch
umklammern kann, bieten die Polen im Grunde genommen nichts Neues.
Eine kleine Prüfung für die Lachmuskeln steht dem potenziellen Hörer
auch noch bevor. Nicht nur das „Es ist Krieg“ sowohl
vom Songtitel, als auch von der Stumpfheit mit einem weit reichend
bekannten Hassbatzen aus deutschen Landen verglichen werden kann,
so sollte man sich doch, insofern man die Sprache nicht
beherrscht, auf seine eigene Landesprache oder auf die
Universalsprache Englisch berufen. Richtig lächerlich wird es
eben erst dann, wenn man versucht ganz ohne musikalische
Untermalung irgendwelche deutsche Aussagen ins Mikro zu krächzen,
welche ich bis Heute noch nicht vollständig entziffern konnte.
Trotz des Kritikpunktes und der freiwilligen Comedyeinlage seitens
der Band, zähle ich NON OPUS DEI auf jeden Fall zu den guten
Kapellen Osteuropas. Mit „The Quintessence“ erfindet
die 4-köpfige Truppe das Rad sicher nicht neu, verbindet aber
technisch anspruchsvollen Schwarzmetall mit stellenweise düsterer,
nebeliger Atmosphäre. Freunde des extremen Metals sollten
garantiert mal reinhören!

Non Opus Dei is een Poolse metal band en 'The Quintessence' is hun
vierde volle lengte cd. Opus Dei is Latijns voor het werk van God.
Om trouw te blijven aan hun geloof hebben deze Polen de subtiele
negatie 'Non' aan deze goddelijke woordcombinatie toegevoegd om er
hun bandnaam van te maken.
De band speelt een degelijke combinatie van death en black metal
met sterke catchy riffs. Krachtige metal word afgewisseld met
interessante rustigere melodieuze momenten. Over het algemeen
klinkt de muziek op deze cd goed, maar ze is niet echt veeleisend,
hoewel ze behoorlijk wat afwisseling toont. Ik vind dit een goede
cd, hoewel ze hiermee niet boven de gemiddelde massa uitkomen.

Recuerdo cuando esta banda editó su primer álbum bajo un sello
espanol(seguro que muchos recordais cual...), pero nunca llegué a
escucharles, y despues de eso les perdí totalmente de vista,
hasta que este "The Quintessence" me llegó del sello
polaco Pagan Records, el cual había editado ya su anterior disco,
titulado "VI: The Satanachists Credo".
Así, cuando me puse esta grabación por primera vez, encontré
dos influencias bastante claras en la música de este banda, las
cuales eran Samael(en especial por la voz, a cargo de Klimirh, la
cual es bastante similar a la de Vorph en "Ceremony Of The
Opposites") o Christ Agony por un lado y Behemoth(de los últimos
discos) por algunos riffs y por la brutalidad en algunas partes
por el otro; por lo tanto, una mezcla de Black y Death Metal con
un sentimiento muy oscuro y no demasiada velocidad, más bien
jugando con las atmósferas(sin usar teclados, lo cual es notable)
y riffs a medio tiempo bastante interesantes, no especialmente técnicos,
pero con mucho feeling, y muy bien combinados con las voces.
Además, los temas fluyen de una tras otra en un orden perfecto,
como un conjunto, solo roto por un tema o dos que tienen un sonido
algo diferente(el mejor ejemplo es "Das Ist Krieg", que
es un tema de Black Metal crudo, cantado en alemán, que no tiene
mucha razón de ser de estar aquí).
Una cosa curiosa es que usan tanto el inglés como el polaco(o el
alemán, como ya dije) en sus letras, las cuales hablas de
ocultismo y antiguas creencias conectadas con el cosmos y la energía
de la tierra, las cuales pegan a la perfección con su música
ritualista y evocadora.
Sobre la producción, no es excesivamente clara, sin querer decir
que no suena bien, pero guarda la crudeza necesaria para crear
algo de atmósfera, resultando en un conjunto simfónico con las
voces apareciendo sobre este.
Esta es una muy buena opción para los que busquen música oscura
y poderosa a medio tiempo y algo atípica.

A tavalyi NOD lemezhez a VI: The Satanachist's Credo-hoz
nem volt szerencsem, de az elozo korongot sokat hallgattam, sot
irtam is rola. A NOD egy olyan egyeni felfogasban nyomja a fekete
femet, hogy egyszeruen nincs banda akihez tudnam hasonlitani oket.
Nem konnyen emesztheto muzsika az ovek, de minel jobban
belemerulok a muzsikajukba, annal jobban tetszik es annal tobb
apro reszletre, erdekes megoldasra, jo temara leszek figyelmes.
Elvont muzsikat rejt a The Quintessence is, viszont egyaltalan nem
muveszkedo, vagy avant-garde, hanem inkabb furcsa. Nincs itt
enekesno, vagy szinti, vagy metalidegen elem es megis valami olyan
egyeni black metal kel eletre, amit mas bandaknal nem hallhatunk.
Sot az old school megkozelites is inkabb jelemzo rajuk, mint a
modernkedes. Zenejuk eredetiseget a szokatlan (legalabbis black
metalban) ritmuskepek adjak, erre epitkeznek. Szovegeik sem
atlagosan irjak korul a sotetseget, meg a misztikumot, hanem
nagyon elvont neha erthetetlen formaban. Egysegesen jo lemez,
elsore nem jott be annyira mint a Sem Al Diavol Va Porti Al Mal,
viszont most tul a tucatnyi meghallgatason ugy erzem, hogy a The
Quintessnce is van olyan jo, sot talan meg job is annal!

Non Opus Dei est un groupe discret dans nos contrées mais qui est
pourtant sur le circuit depuis presque dix ans ! Nos Polonais nous
reviennent donc en cette fin d ‘année 2006 avec leur
quatrieme album et digne successeur de « VI: The
Satanachist's » s’intitulant « The Quintessence
».
Bénéficient d’un atwork tres soigné et d’une bonne
production, on peut dire apres la premiere écoute que ce groupe
fait partie d’une autre sphere ! Mélangeant différents
styles de black métal, cet album est vraiment tres intéressant.
En effet, on commence avec des titres comme « 21XI 2004
» et « Neither by time nor Space » qui nous
lancent dans cette écoute épique ! Tempos variés, chant clair
et guttural sublime melés a de belles mélodies qui nous font
mettre un premier pas dans l’univers de Non Opus Dei. Puis
« Kolejny Obrot Kotu » et « The Wordless
Galactic Ceremony » nous montrent incontestablement que
l’on tient la quelque chose de formidable! Ce groupe nous
apporte un témoignage historique concernant le black métal avec
des titres qui retracent l’essence de cet art… On
pense a la noirceur des premiers albums de Darthrone, a
l’ambiance de Burzum, a l’efficacité d’un
Gorgoroth, tant de groupe qui ont marqué l’histoire…
« Oezy Tej Kobiety » est une plage ambiante avec ses
parties de flutes ténébreuses qui introduisent « Emergion
: The Quintessence of The new Spirituality » avec merveille
! Des riffs lancinants, des vocaux cauchemardesques expriment ici
un travail de composition vraiment mur…
Trop de discours gâcherai ce que nous présente ici ce groupe,
tout ce que je peux vous dire c’est que cet album se doit
d’etre ajouter a votre cd-théque car « Non Opus Dei
» nous offre ici le meilleur album de sa carriere et cela en
vaut vraiment le détour! Incontournable! 8.5/10

I read thrilling reviews about that release on Pagan Records web
site, so I was expecting some kind of very memorable album from
N.O.D. Well, "The Quintessence" is about original Black
Metal in the way they're not in the traditional Scandinavian B.M
or the raw Polish 90's stuffs. This Polish band is more a kind of
mid tempo, sometime progressive sometime more conventional B.M
with some avant-garde parts such as in "Kelejny Obrot
Kota". Combos such as early Borknagar, Arcturus second's
release or even Blut Aus Nord's materials have probably been an
influence for the most progressive guitar lines. For sure they are
creative and give another color to Black Metal, a kind of new
vision of this range, through almost mid tempo composition, with
raspy vocals. According to me the vocals could have been better
and the band could have found more enjoyable riffs as some songs
sound alike all along the album. Anyway, check it if you're open
minded B.M fan.

What we have here is a very complex Black/Death band with grim
vocals and very dark melodic music with a very occultish heart.
The Progressive element really stand out in the music being
created. The time changes with the very very cold vocals are very
interesting to say the least. The harmony guitar work reminds me
of bands line hypocrisy or even at times And Oceans. When they
come in the blasting riffs of NON OPUS DEI come in and completely
slay!!!. NON OPUS DEI has alot of the feeling of some of the later
immortal or mayhem releases as well were production and creativity
are just as important and the crushing and grinding riffs and
percussion assault. This is a gem in the waiting pick it up fans
of avant black metal.

Dass es sich bei Non Opus Dei nicht um ein Werk Gottes
handelt, kann ich nach Inohrenscheinnahme des inzwischen vierten
Langeisens der polnischen Schwarzmetaller voll und ganz bestätigen.
Vielmehr hantieren die vier Krachmacher mit spiritueller schwarzer
Mythologie, was sich in Form des Silberlings "The
Quintessence" einmal mehr in bedrückendster Manier
manifestiert und dem neugierigen Konsumenten die umwegreiche Reise
in das Herz der Hölle eröffnet.
Typisch für Non Opus Dei ist die sehr dezente Art, sich zum
diabolischen Black Metal zu bekennen. Ohne unter Zuhilfenahme von
Corpsepaint und Pentagrammen mit Zaunpfählen nur so um sich zu
schlagen, hat man sich ein scheinbar tiefgründiges Konzept
erarbeitet, aus dessen Umsetzung eine absolut individuelle
musikalische Huldigung des Gehörnten resultiert. Ohne gängige
Klischees zu bedienen macht man sich ans Werk und kreiert dreizehn
facettenreiche Kompositionen, die zwar nicht an Überlänge
leiden, sich aber durch Variation, Idee und gewaltig Pfeffer
auszeichnen. So gelingt es der überragend ausgefallenen
Produktion, die einzelnen Instrumente gesondert voneinander
hervorzuheben und auch den schleppenden Parts eine grosse Portion
Druck zu injizieren. Nicht ein Hauch von technischer Unzulänglichkeit
ist wahrzunehmen, man spielt grandios mit Tempowechseln,
Instrumentaleinlagen und gesampelten Effekten und scheut sich auch
nicht, Elemente anderer metallischer Stilarten einzubringen.
Weiterhin fällt auf, dass man sich nicht ausschliesslich der
polnischen Sprache bedient, sondern auch Ausflüge in englische
und deutsche Gefilde unternimmt, was ein weiterer Hinweis auf die
Vielseitigkeit des Polenvierers ist. Leider fehlt mir jegliches
albumbezogene Infomaterial seitens der Plattenfirma, was mir eine
weitere Interpretation von "The Quintessence" verwährt
und mich weiter im schwarzen Non Opus Dei-Tümpel schwimmen und
tauchen lässt.
Zusammengefasst lässt sich "The Quintessence" nur mit
'sehr gut' bewerten, alles andere wäre Quatsch. Manch
eingefleischter Black Metal-Jünger mag die arge Verspieltheit
kritisieren, ein anderer die zeitlich zumeist knapp bemessenen
Lieder, ich erachte das Album aber als eine der stärkeren Veröffentlichungen
von Pagan Records und ein statuiertes Exempel modernen

Mächtig legt die vierte Scheibe von NON OPUS DEI los, mit einem
ziemlich druckvollen, atmosphärischen Riff im Mid-Tempo und einer
grimmigen Stimme.
Es hat sich einiges getan im Vergleich zum letztjährigen Album,
das sich doch zu sehr in Experimenten und typisch
slawisch-ungreifbaren Songstrukturen verlor. Die Songs sind
kompakter, die Riffs griffiger, die Platte im Ganzen übersichtlicher.
Auch der Sound ist moderner und europäischer geworden und bewegt
sich eindeutig vom reinen Black Metal weg, hin zu einer eigenständigen,
düsteren Variante zwischen Dark, Black, Gothic und walzendem
Death Metal. Die akustischen Instrumente der letzten Platte sind
fast weggefallen, dafür legt die Band 2006 mehr Wert auf
rhythmische Drumpatterns, wuchtige Basslinien und schräge
Gitarrenparts.
Bei allen (intelligent gemachten) Veränderungen schaffen es NON
OPUS DEI, ihre eigene Note zu behalten und sogar gravierend weiter
zu entwickeln. Dabei erinnern sie ein wenig an SECRETS OF THE
MOON, auch wenn ihre Stücke weniger geschliffen und insgesamt ein
wenig schneller geworden sind. Den Hang zum Okkulten, eher
Insichgekehrten ist den Polen allerdings ebenfalls deutlich
anzumerken - musikalisch und auch inhaltlich. Wie den Songtiteln
(auf Polnisch, Deutsch und Englisch) zu entnehmen ist, geht es um
Spiritualität, Kosmos, sich ewig drehende Räder, um Ewigkeit und
natürlich um Krieg und "Quintessence". Das sind
offenbar Themen, die auf keinem avantgardistischen
Black-Metal-Album im 21. Jahrhundert, das etwas auf sich hält,
fehlen dürfen.
Zusammengenommen ist "The Quintessence" im Bereich des
polnischen Black Metals sicher eine (eingeschränkte) Empfehlung für
diejenigen Hörer, die weder mit High-Technique-Metal wie BEHEMOTH
noch mit reinem Black Metal wie BESATT etwas anfangen können. NON
OPUS DEI bewegen sich gekonnt zwischen Professionalität und
Charme, schreiben gute, wiedererkennbare Songs, habe eine
Produktion, die auf einer Augenhöhe mit dem derzeitigen
Undergroundstandard ist und halten dieses Niveau mühelos über
eine Dreiviertelstunde. Mehr kann man eigentlich von einer
"guten Platte" nicht verlangen, denke ich.

Weitab vom gewöhnlichen Highspeed-Black Metal oder der
totmetallisch beeinflußten Variante sind die (von Kollege Memme
so getauften) katholischen Wikinger NON OPUS DEI unterwegs. Mit
einer druckvollen Produktion ausgestattet, kann „The
Quintessence“ zu großen Teilen überzeugen und besonders in
den doomigen Passagen Atmosphäre aufbauen; bei den schnelleren
Parts klingt’s leider zu austauschbar, das langweilige
„The Eternal Dance“ sei hier als Beispiel genannt. Die
meisten Songs sind aber deutlich besser und bringen NON OPUS DEI
in die oberen Ränge des Genres. Nur den völlig peinlichen Song
„Das Ist Krieg“ hätten sie sich sparen sollen. Warum
müssen sich Black Metaller mit sowas immer lächerlich machen?
Textzeilen Marke „Ich grabe eine tiefe Grube“,
gesungen mit unterirdischem Akzent sind schlicht peinlich. Vom dümmlichen
Kokettieren mit den braunen Scheiß mal abgesehen, das ist sowieso
unter aller Sau. Ohne diesen Track wäre die Scheibe in Ordnung,
so landen NON OPUS DEI in der Ecke „dümmlich und latent
braun“. Da können sie erzählen, was sie wollen.

The Polish band released the fourth album and, despite
almost ten years of activity, I doubt they will get the expected
recognition now. This type of Black Metal is not a new one, but
when you complicate over the edge, it seems much less accessible
and digestible. I’ve listened to this album for three times
and I can say for sure that the Poles are very talented in
handling their instruments. It is just that the 13 tracks arouse a
state of madness that makes me doubt about the existence of any
logic within the album, plus the lyrics are in Polish so it is
impossible to understand them. For those willing to listen to an
elaborated Black Metal album, also evoking other brutal styles,
NON OPUS DEI could be a pleasant choice for the afternoon. If you
want to comprehend more of their music, than you’ll need a

I have been quoted as saying "nothing gay comes from
Poland." But, surely a country so rich in excellent Death and
Black Metal, is bound to yield a few turkeys, right? So
far...Wrong! Non Opus Dei keep up the fine Polish tradition of ass
kicking and non-faggotry with this slab of Black Metal wickedness.
While not exactly blowing the listener away, there is a certain
level of originality here, as NOD include elements of Doom and
traditional Heavy-Metal to their lethally potent BM dirge. Pretty

Nigdy wcześniej nie miałem okazji zetknąć się z twórczością
Non Opus Dei. Może po prostu nie zwracałem uwagi na artykuły na
temat tego zespołu myśląc, ze to kolejna 'blackowa młócka'. W
końcu nazwa zespołu "Nie dzieło Boga" zobowiązuje do
bluźnierstwa. Ale jak slogany promocyjne nowego albumu głoszą
to "charakterystyczne brzmienie Non Opus Dei można zamknąć
w następujących słowach: awangarda, diaboliczność, rytualność,
magia, łamanie stereotypów i granic". O ile zawsze hasła
pokroju "diaboliczność, magia itp." rodzą na mojej
twarzy ironiczny uśmiech, o tyle chciałem zobaczyć ile tej
"niezwykłości" w Non Opus Dei jest.
Po kilkukrotnym przesłuchaniu tego albumu muszę się poddać,
gdyż faktycznie Non Opus Dei jest zespołem nietuzinkowym. Pomimo
tego, że zespół gra black metal, to muszę przyznać, że
jedynym moim skojarzeniem był Marduk z okresu "Panzer
division" - ale tylko w bardziej ekstremalnych momentach. Nie
odważyłbym się nazwać twórczości Non Opus Dei awangardą,
gdyż "The Quintessence" nie zawiera tak odważnej
muzyki jak tworzą chociażby UnExpect, Arcturus czy Ulver, ale już
sam fakt, ze zespół potrafił znaleźć swoją niszę w wydawałoby
się wyeksploatowanym gatunku jakim jest black metal, może świadczyć
o ogromnym potencjale zespołu. Nie posunąłbym się także do
stwierdzenia jakoby zespół łamał stereotypy i granice, ale
niewątpliwie jego muzyka wychodzi daleko poza schemat. Na uwagę
zasługuje choćby bardzo trip-hopowe wykorzystanie instrumentów
klawiszowych, zastosowanie wielu egzotycznych i starodawnych
instrumentów, które świetnie wpasowują się w utwory. Ciekawym
zabiegiem jest także fakt, że teksty utworów są pisane w języku
polskim, angielskim i niemieckim, co w żaden sposób nie wypacza
zawartości krążka. Momentami idzie nawet zrozumieć co
wokalista skrzeczy, co jest bardzo pozytywnym zjawiskiem jak na
ten gatunek muzyczny. Na podkreślenie zasługuje także fakt, że
utwory wcale nie są utrzymane w szaleńczych tempach. Dominują
raczej średnie, a nawet wolne tempa, które stanowią szkielet
dla patetycznych, apokaliptyczne brzmiących utworów. Kapela
zastosowała wiele interesujących zabiegów aranzacyjnych, jak
choćby "zdysonansowane" solówki, podkreślające
metrum utworu, jak i masę zwolnień i cięższych partii, które
powodują, że utwory nabierają charakteru, dynamiki i są
bardziej interesujące. Zespół urozmaica tempo utworów, przez
co w żaden sposób nie możemy mówić o monotonii. Jedyną rzeczą,
do której przyczepiłbym się na tym albumie, to za słabo nagłośniony
wokal, który momentami ginie w zalewie dźwięków.
W ten oto sposób miałem okazję zapoznać się z twórczością
jednego z najbardziej interesujących polskich zespołów. I choć
"The Quintessence" jest już czwartym pełnowymiarowym
wydawnictwem formacji, to zapewne sięgnę po ich wcześniejsze
dokonania, aby prześledzić rozwój tej interesującej kapeli.

“The Quintessence” is the 4th full length release from
NON OPUS DEI, after almost 10 years of existence, and here comes
for the me the first opportunity to listen to them! NON OPUS DEI
unleashes 13 tracks (including an interlude and an intense outro)
of one of the most original and creative Black Metal I listened to
for years! During the 46 minutes of this album, NON OPUS DEI knows
how to create real insane atmospheres, with twisted riffs and sick
melodies. The sickest parts of this album can remind of the weird
parts in the vein of BLUT AUS NORD, or sick slow parts from early
ARKHON INFAUSTUS. NON OPUS DEI is not about Deppressive Black
metal or so, but the dynamic and heavy sound melted with the
insane musick of the band creates a really strange mood! The whole
album is more into the mid tempo or even low tempo stuff, but some
tracks are played faster, sometimes in the vein of bands such as
BLOT MINE for example. Nothing more to say about this album, the
feelings and atmospheres this album brings are rather hard to
describe, and finally the only thing I could say is BUY OR DIE!!
Last time I’ve been so impressed by a Black Metal album was
for the mighty “the Work Which Transforms God” album
from BLUT AUS NORD. So I think you can imagine how great
“The Quintessence” from NON OPUS DEI can be great!!

This time change of a label has not occured, as you can see, as
well as the previous material, this is published by efforts Polish
Pagan records. In the musical plan, to be exact, stylistic,
changes have not occured, it is all the same gloomy metal filled
by dark emotions. The musical component, as one would expect, does
not repeat one for one last works, but, there is that spirit,
which for itself speaks supposedly same NON OPUS DEI from Poland.
That is the spirit has remained former, but the musical component,
naturally, is developed and modified. And it speaks only that
musicians go the road, neither on as on anybody not looking and
nobody listening! The label has characterized style of group as
avant-garde black metal, yes, the share of the truth in it is, but
I do not agree, that it black metal (it I not about an atmosphere
dark, but about the eruption of sounds metal, that is if and black
metal not standard), most likely, will tell more precisely - dark
metal vs black metal the base. All is stylistic prerogatives, and
as a whole, yes, music gloomy, dark, bewitching, firmly driving in
in the ground, and even, I would tell, bears in myself any ritual
spirit. Workmanship good, all is played exactly, minded, but, at
the same time, slightly hard, for that what to understand music

Nie przebrzmiały jeszcze echa od czasu wydanego w 2005 r.
"VI: The Satanachist Credo" a już w niespełna rok po
tym fakcie otrzymujemy nowy album NON OPUS DEI zatytułowany
"The Quintessence". Zarówno poprzedni materiał, jak i
ten został wydany przez Pagan Records. Na krążku znalazło się
13 premierowych utworów, które łącznie składają się na
ponad 45 minut niespodziewanie "innego" black metalu.
Zespół NON OPUS DEI jest tworem już okrzepłym, który nie musi
podążać ślepo za posągowymi hordami z Norwegii, czy szukać
doskonałości wśród obecnych black metalowych standardów. Nie
zmienia to faktu, że łatwo określić muzykę tworzoną przez
zespół, gdyż zdaje się ona być zawieszona pomiędzy teraźniejszością
a przeszłością. Niefortunne próby klasyfikacji należy chyba
sobie podarować i nie patrzeć na muzykę NON OPUS DEI w
kategoriach ścisłych ram gatunku, bardziej jak na kolaż
gitarowych pasaży z surowymi konstrukcjami riffów zwieńczony
klasycznymi wokalizami. Wszystko to zostało podane w raczej
odmienny sposób, niż przyszłoby nam przypuszczać, co sprawia,
że na pewno "The Quintessence" jest zjawiskiem
ciekawym, choć niekoniecznie porywającym. Otwartość słuchacza
na specyficzne dźwięki NON OPUS DEI to sprawa kluczowa przy
zapoznawaniu się z tym materiałem, gdyż bez tego niezależnie
od poziomu black metalowego znawstwa, ciężko będzie mu przebrnąć
przez ten dziwaczny materiał. O samej kwintesencji tej płyty również
niełatwo powiedzieć, gdyż zasadza się ona na koncepcie energii
kosmosu, jako siły sprawczej i kluczowej w naszym życiu. Właśnie
wokół tych koncepcji została zbudowana płyta "The
Quintessence", twór niełatwy i wymagający. Niezdolni do poświęcenia
w pełni swojej uwagi i zaufania muzyce, mogą sobie odpuścić.

Zapewne niejeden z was był tak samo zaskoczony jak i uradowany na
wieść o nowym wydawnictwie Non Opus Dei. W ubiegłym roku ukazał
się przecież "VI: Satanachist's Credo", a jeszcze rok
wstecz "Sem Al Diavol". Spodziewać się można było co
najwyżej EPki, a tu proszę, pełny i na dodatek zupełnie poważny
materiał. Tytuł może być mylący, gdyż sugeruje coś doskonałego
i ostatecznego - tymczasem ekipa Klimorh'a wciąż nie ustaje w
swoich poszukiwaniach. "The Quintessence" to album
wymagający, to metal diabelski ale nie do końca mogący być
zakwalifikowany jako black metal. W zasadzie już dawno powinno się
przestać stosować tę etykietkę, bo jest ona zwyczajnie naciągana
i nie bardzo pasuje do obecnego, tak bardzo rozbudowanego oblicza
Non Opus Dei. Oczywiście kapela nie stara się na siłę zrywać
koneksji z tym gatunkiem, co ostatecznie słychać w
"Energion: The quintessence...", "Das ist
Krieg" czy "To stop the everturning wheel". To z
pewnością utwory dla tego stylu bardzo reprezentatywne, ale
dobrze przy okazji nie słyszeć po raz kolejny zrzynki z typowych
skandynawskich standardów, choć momentami naprawdę blisko tej
kapeli do wybryków Emperor czy Carpathian Forest. Raz jeszcze
mamy do czynienia z albumem multijęzykowym, jednak ile korzyści
wynika z takiego posunięcia mogliśmy się przekonać już
poprzednio. Zupełnie pojechanymi kompozycjami są "Oczy tej
kobiety" oraz szamańsko brzmiący "Gdy Faun poszedł na
wojnę" - czegoś takiego mało kto mógł się spodziewać,
choć wiadomo, że akurat po tym zespole spodziewać się można
wszystkiego. Wszelkie bariery już od dawna nie istnieją a te
tajemnicze niemalże iluzoryczne utwory doskonale o tym świadczą.
Twórczość NOD nie można zaliczyć do grupy tych najłatwiejszych,
ale cieszy fakt, że możemy pochwalić się przed światem tak
nowatorskim zespołem, który nie poddaje się trendom i nie boi
się nadawać swoim pomysłom realnych kształtów. Oklaski dla
tych panów - oni wybrali smak swojego życia!:)

I remember reviewing Sem al diavol va porti al mal and not liking
it very much. Since then the Polish avantgarde black metallers
have put out two albums via Pagan Records. The Quintessence is the
more recent of the two. It's quite clear that things have happened
since I last heard anything from the band. The music have matured
and become far more vibrant and interesting.
The songs are also more reachable in their expression. It all
seems a little more direct and I could not help like "21 XII
2004", "Neither by Time Nor Space" and "The
Wordless Galactic Ceremony" right away. The band still has an
ear for the odd. This they prove with "Oczy Tej
Kobiety", "Das Ist Krieg" and " Gdy Faun
Poszed? Na Wojn?...". These tracks do provide The
Quintessence with both feeling and identity, but at the same time
they also affect the CD in a negative way as they all are boring.
Non Opus Dei still sing in both English and Polish. They even try
with some German in "Das Ist Krieg". Unlike on Sem al
diavol va porti al mal I actually like that the band use both the
Polish and English language. It adds feeling and life to the music
and makes it appear less standardized. The songs have an
unpolished aura to them which give it all a dim feel. The sound is
also quite fat and full which makes it almost death metal-like now
and then.
Non Opus Dei 2006 is far more interesting than what I've
previously heard from the unit. The band have perfected their
style and found a more accessible style. The Quintessence appeals
a lot more to my taste and if you like me haven't been that fond
of some of their previous material then it may be the right time
to give the Poles a second chance.

Non Opus Die is avant-garde black metal and "The Quintessence
is their newest release. Album opens song with very strange name
"21.0.2004." and that when it starts. Music presents a
combination of black metal and misanthropy. Sometimes there are
slow depressive parts and sometimes there are fast thrashy parts.
Also there are narrations that bring up to misanthropic
atmosphere. There are some moments with keys on song "Oezy
tej kobiety" which I really liked. Songs are on English and
Polish one is titled in german so I believe that is on German.
Production is on the level and all instruments are hearable. A
nice release indeed.

Nie miałem jak dotąd przyjemności wysłuchać pełnego albumu
NON OPUS DEI. Diovis obdarował mnie promówką najnowszego dzieła
i muszę mu jeszcze raz za to podziękować, ponieważ moim narządom
słuchu nowe dzieło NOD wybitnie przypadło do gustu. Na
"The Quintessence" znajdziecie trzynaście kompozycji
baaardzo inteligentnego metalowego grania, które można określić
mianem awangardy black metalu. Znakomicie słucha się "The
Quintessence". Utwory zostały genialnie zaaranżowane. Wyraźnie
słychać, że włożono dużo pracy w komponowanie i nagrywanie
materiału. Zadbano o każdy, nawet najmniejszy szczegół. Na
nowym dziele NOD nie usłyszałem żadnego przypadkowego dźwięku.
Zespół posiada perfekcyjnie rozwiniętą samoświadomość
muzyczną. Tworzy dźwięki nasycone unikalnym, diabolicznym i
rytualnym klimatem, który robi ogromne wrażenie! Kreatywność
grupy jest zadziwiająca. Na nowym dziele znalazło się kilka ton
metalowych dźwięków przekutych z najszlachetniejszego kruszca.
Bogactwo pomysłów i brzmień jest imponujące. Utwory w warstwie
lirycznej posiadają ciekawy, ideologiczny koncept. Napisane są w
języku polskim, angielskim i niemieckim. Wielowymiarowość
"The Quitessence" powoduje, że nie można poznać i
zrozumieć tej płyty po pierwszym odsłuchu. Podczas kolejnych
podróży z "The Quitessence" odkrywa się kolejne aranżacyjne
smaczki. Powiem Wam, że momentami płyta kojarzy mi się trochę
z "Blood Ritual" SAMAEL. Ten krążek trzeba po prostu
kupić i słuchać! Kosztuje tylko dwadzieścia pięć złotych,
co za muzę TAKIEJ wartości jest ceną naprawdę niewielką. Już
teraz możecie odwiedzić stronę wydawcy i posłuchać kawałka
"Gdy imperium upada..." oraz obejrzeć video do utworów
"Kolejny obrót koła" oraz "Das ist Krieg".

Czym jest Non Opus Dei, jaką pozycję zajmuje wśród pozostałych
kolegów z podwórka ? Nad pierwszym pytaniem można z pewnością
debatować przez niejeden wieczór, bowiem już wcześniejszymi płytami
zespół udowodnił iż trzeba się z nimi liczyć i co najlepsze
oczekiwać black metalu pojechanego eksperymentem zdecydowanie
udanym. Natomiast rozwijanie odpowiedzi na drugie pytanie jest
chyba czynem całkowicie zbytecznym i nie mniej oczywistym.
"VI: The Satanachist's Credo" był krążkiem
najzwyczajniej dobrym, ciekawym, lecz na najnowszej pozycji NOD
zaczyna się ocierać o prawdziwą istotę geniuszu
kompozycyjnego. Brzmienie, jak brzmienie nie stanowi swą postacią
czegoś na tyle rewolucyjnego jak aranżacje, których temat
poszedł w większe dopracowanie. Zespół zagłębia się jeszcze
bardziej we własnym stylu i nadaje mu większej melodyki, niż na
poprzedniku, co oczywiście zapobiega jakimkolwiek przypadkom,
niechcianym wybrykom. Widocznie ten dosyć krótki okres czasu nie
poszedł na marne, a tego się właśnie spodziewałem. Kiedy
tylko usłyszałem iż kolejna płyta niebawem, to wręcz
automatycznie przybłąkała się do mnie myśl, iż pewnie będzie
to powtórka z ostatniego albumu, taka niby zaspokojona ciekawość,
lecz coś jednak nie było powiedziane z pełnym impetem i do końca
zrealizowanym pomysłem, brakowało tej czarciej aury. Słuchając
jeszcze gorącej "The Quintessence" takich braków
absolutnie nie czuję, kompozycje delektując postacią wzbogaconą
o wydoroślałą spójność prawie, że wpływają jedna po
drugiej. Wspomniana spójność objawia się w największym
procencie przez niby klasyczne black'owe riffy, które same w
sobie stanowią broń średniego rażenia, lecz wplecione pomiędzy
charakterystyczne zabiegi tworzą unikat mogący wprowadzić
niejedną hordę ( nie tylko krajową !! ) w zakłopotanie.
Pozostając jeszcze w temacie owych, klasycznych manewrów trzeba
przyznać, iż był to chyba najlepszy pomysł z możliwych, a to
z prostej przyczyny. Non Opus Dei nie depcząc klimatycznego podejścia
zachowuje swoje maniery i co więcej wytwarza pomiędzy tymi dwoma
aspektami chemię w obliczu, której trudno przejść obojętnie.
Do płyty nakręcono teledysk "Kolejny Obrót Koła"
zrealizowany drogą gęstej symboliki, pokazujący również, że
niski kwit nie zawsze musi stać na równi z żałosnym obrazem.
Najważniejsze to odpowiedni pomysł i realizacja, czyli dwie
rzeczy, których tym razem nie zapomniano.

Olsztyński NON OPUS DEI to obecnie jedna z prężniej
działających black awangardowych formacji w naszym kraju. Po
znakomitym albumie "VI: The Satanachist Credo"
niespodziewanie pojawił się kolejny materiał w postaci
"The Quintessence". Nie wnikając mocno w szczegóły można
śmiało stwierdzić, iż jest to kolejny album rozwijający
filozoficzno - merytoryczną koncepcję muzyki opartej na
charakterystycznych aranżacjach gitarowych oraz specyficznym
surowym i mrocznym brzmieniu. Nastąpiła jedynie mała zmiana w
zawartości lirycznej. Na tym albumie Klimorh (główny mózg
zespołu - autor muzyki i tekstów) dotyka tematu pierwotnej
energii wywołującej cykl narodzin, życia i śmierci. Płyta
zaczyna się znakomitym utworem "21.XII.2004". Ciężki
gitarowy riff rozpędza olsztyński walec. Charakterystyczny sposób
gry gitar, rozłożonych na dwie równoległe muzyczne linie

Quintessence" tym bardziej zostajemy wchłonięci, opętani
nieznaną kosmiczną siłą. Gdy rozpoczyna się "Kolejny Obrót
Koła" dreszcze przemykają się po plecach. Bez wątpienia
to sztandarowy numer olsztynian. Prosty a jednoczenie głęboko
filozoficzny tekst zaśpiewany po polsku robi duże wrażenie.
Klimorh znakomicie radzi sobie z ojczystym językiem i śmiem
nawet stwierdzić, iż jest to jedna z najistotniejszych cech odróżniających
NON OPUS DEI z grona black metalowych formacji. Znakomita narracja
oraz czystość wypowiedzi sprawia, iż teksty są czytelne i łatwe

muzycznego pejzażu N.O.D. bez których ciężko było by się
obejść. Uważam to wręcz za dużą zaletę oraz mocny atut
zespołu. "The Quintessence" to album na pewno przełomowy
dla N.O.D. oraz kolejny krok w muzycznej ewolucji. By w pełni
poczuć energię i wyzwoloną w muzyce siłę nie wystarczy tylko
wsłuchać się w muzyczną treść. Dla słuchacza jest to album
wymagający emocjonalnego jak i duchowego zaangażowania,
skoncentrowania myśli oraz podporządkowania ich sile która napędza
cały ziemski (muzyczny) mechanizm. Album nie na tyle trudny bo go
nie zrozumieć, ale potrzeba czasu by do niego dotrzeć. Wyższy
stopień muzycznego zaawansowania. Takie albumy kochamy
najbardziej.
