Hermh are back with another dose of vampirism in the form of symphonic black metal. On the menu this time are an intro, three new songs, a cover of Venom’s Black metal, an annoying (but I’ll get to that later on) re-mix and four live tracks. So it’s sort of an MCD with bonuses. And as the intro’s bombastic drumming and horn-blowing sets in it’s easy to drift away in your thoughts and get swept away into a fantasy land, but you’re abruptly returned to reality by Bart’s harsh screaming.
Ranging from gnarled screaming to deep grunts his voice is definitely in the foreground of this record, while still not stealing the show. ‘Cause the intricacy of the music is really the selling point. They manage to take a style like symphonic black metal and not sound very melodic. The riffing is not what you’d normally expect, as it is rather technical and progressive, with some highly unorthodox keyboard patterns to go with it. And this offers a breath of fresh air, accompanied by the skillful drumming that adds much needed brutality (too not become overly melodic, of course) with the bass drum action. And when you add to this the voice of Bart the sound of Hermh is very harsh and grim, but still remaining within the symphonic part of black metal. The production is clean and clear, but not overly digital so it ruins the music.
But this goes only for the studio recorded tracks, which includes the Venom cover. And what a cool cover it is. Sure, it’s been done hundreds of times before, but these lads surely gets the feet stomping and head banging. Afterwards we have the industrial techno-shite called Red blood running. Now to me it is utterly annoying as I can’t stand digital music. So let’s quickly leave it behind and move on to the live material.
The sound is not the best I’ve heard, but it’s certainly no way near the worst. It’s ok. The four tracks are from the Eden’s fire album, so it’s more of the symphonic, but with a dose of death metal as well. It sounds as a well performed set that was appreciated by the audience. I can’t say it does much for me, I’d much rather listen to the first five tracks one more time, or put on Eden’s fire. Although Back from divine is wicked here…

"After The Fire - Ashes" is a continuation of where
"Eden's Fire" left, which in turn was ignited by the
"Before The Eden". While "Eden's Fire" was
probably the BM album of the year (2006) the end of the trilogy
"After The Fire - Ashes" is too fast & furious to
compete in the same league. Compare it to Dimmu Borgir's "Godless
Savage Garden" and you'll get the picture. Apart from 4 new
songs (+ intro), there are another 4 live tracks and a Red Emprez
version of "Red BlooD RunninG" from "Before The
Eden". In addition there's a Venom cover of the legendary
titletrack "Black Metal". The live tracks are certainly
showing what a great band it is, not only on record but also on
stage. The cover version is nicely executed in the spirit of the
early days of BM. Bart sounds like the filthy incarnation of Clive
"Jesus Christ" Archer. It's always great listening to
bands hailing their ancestors, especially well-known tracks that
everyone has a preference to; and Venom is certainly one of them,
you either hate them or simply love it. For hardcore fans "After
The Fire - Ashes" is without a doubt compulsory, but to
newcomers it's not an album I would highly recommend, it's simply
just too many pieces of everything, call it a Hermh puzzle -
you'll get the picture but the edges surrounding it avoids "After
The Fire - Ashes" from being anything else than a collection
of bits and pieces. On the other hand, it holds the key to the
bombastic world of Hermh, which is highly recommended.Nevertheless,
I would highly recommend everyone of you who are unfamiliar with
Hermh to take one step backwards, because "Eden's Fire"
is all the introduction you'll ever need, it's probably still one
of the best BM albums there is. Unfortunately "After The Fire
- Ashes" is not Hermh on its best, in my opinion it seems
like a blueprint of "Godless Savage Garden" that doesn't
really extend beyond a promotion CD.

Symfonische black metal. Daar maak je mij meestal niet blij mee.
Als ik aan symfonische black metal denk, schieten bands als
Emperor, Anorexia Nervosa en dergelijke bands in mijn hoofd,
furieuze black metal, met majestueuze, bombastische orkestraties.
Vaak wordt dit genre in black metal echter verward met Casio
kinderpret, iets waar ik vrij geïrriteerd door kan raken.
Hermh hoort daar niet bij. Opgericht in 1993, is deze band een van
de oudste black metal formaties uit Polen. Deze band heeft
overigens in de tijd dat ze bestaan al flink wat bandleden er
doorheen gejaagd en de band heeft ook al een keer uit elkaar
gelegen. In 1998 startte vocalist en oprichter Bart de band weer
op en heden ten dage is meneer nog het enige overgebleven
originele lid in de band. Dit is trouwens de eerste keer dat ik
met deze band in aanraking kom en meteen krijg ik twee releases in
één jaar voor mijn neus. De DVD en het nieuwe album 'After The
Fire - The Ashes'.
Theatrale, zware black metal met flink wat elementen uit het
latere werk van Dimmu Borgir, alleen allemaal wat meer rechttoe
rechtaan. Ook de zanglijnen doen me hier en daar aan Shagrath
denken. Dit is overigens niet een van mijn favoriete zangers maar
het past perfect bij deze muziek. Dit album heeft gelukkig wel een
lekkere productie! Alles staat vet in de mix, alles komt goed tot
zijn recht, iets dat te vaak niet het geval is bij met keyboard
doorspekte black metal bands. Mijn complimenten! Nu doet Hermh me
ook op sommige momenten denken aan de Limbo black metal formatie
Carach Angren, andersom trouwens ook, maar het lijkt me sterk dat
deze bands eerder werk van elkaar hebben gehoord. Waar ik totaal
niet onder de indruk was van de DVD van deze heren, ben ik wel
onder de indruk van dit album.

Hermh aus Polen haben neben der DVD "The Spiritual Nation Born" aktuell die EP "After The Fire - Ashes" am Start, die sich konzeptionell als Einheit mit dem 2006er Langspieler "Eden's Fire" versteht und keine wesentlichen hörbaren Unterschiede
offenbart.Die fehlende Weiterentwicklung, nach der ich in meiner Funktion als Rezensent natürlich schreien muss, schiebe ich einfach mal auf die thematische Zusammengehörigkeit mit dem Vorgängerwerk - damit ist dieser Punkt
erledigt. An sich gefällt mir das Tonmaterial von "After The Fire - Ashes" ohnehin sehr gut, was die musikalische Evolution in den Hintergrund rücken lässt.
Auf technisch höchstem Niveau gehen die polnischen Flattermänner einmal mehr zu Werke und beeindrucken mit melodischem Symphonic Black Metal, wie man ihn heutzutage eigentlich nur von Hochglanz-Formationen wie Dimmu Borgir und Konsorten um die Ohren gehauen bekommt.
Ähnlich verfährt man daher auch in Sachen Songwriting und
Arrangement. Überwiegend gehoben ist das vorherrschende Tempo, die Gitarrenriffs kommen trotz ihrer flinken Anlage wuchtig und druckvoll daher, mehrstimmige Vokalarbeit ist zu vernehmen und über allem tanzt ein behendes Keyboard, stets Melodik und Atmosphäre
ausstreuend. Hin und wieder reisst man den Hörer vom Schwarzmetall in den satten Bereich des Todesbleis, nur um ihn postwendend zurück in den Black Metal oder einer getragenen Instrumentalpassage vor die Füsse zu
stossen. Wahrhaft meisterlich, welche einfache Vielfalt Hermh Kompositionen wie "Crownymph" oder "Wolfish Flower" entlocken und welch handwerkliche Bandbreite die Polen im Laufe der Jahre zu servieren gelernt
haben. Ich wage es kaum auszusprechen, aber Hermh überzeugen mit "After The Fire - Ashes" derart nachhaltig, dass sie, wenn sie diesen Pfad der Entwicklung weiter verfolgen, in den nächsten Jahren an ihren Landsleuten von Behemoth werden vorbeiziehen können.
Aktuell sehe ich die beiden Truppen auf gleicher Augenhöhe, was als grosses Kompliment für Hermh und ihre Veröffentlichungen zu verstehen ist.
Ich empfehle daher jedem Freund moderner und polierter Black Metal-Musik, sich mit eigenen Ohren von der Qualität von "After The Fire - Ashes" zu überzeugen - es lohnt sich!

Formada en 1993, esta banda polaca practica un Black Metal con
fuerte presencia de teclados y complejas orquestaciones. La verdad,
suenan como un cruce entre sus compatriotas VESANIA y los
italianos STORMLORD. Su mérito reside en que no son tan extremos
como los primeros ni tan épicos como los segundos, logrando un
sonido más personal que el de algunas bandas similares. Tras tres
LPs y algún lanzamiento más, este año nos presentan este
EP de diez temas, cuatro de ellos en vivo. La producción es
perfecta, con un sonido limpio y equilibrado, pero sin caer en la
sobreproducción, erros que cometen la mayoría de bandas que
practican este tipo de Black Metal (el ejemplo más claro, los
noruegos DIMMU BORGIR). Esto hace que podamos disfrutar de un
sonido claro y directo.
En cuanto a los temas en vivo, sinceramente creo que sobran por lo
menos dos temas, pues escuchar temas en directo de anteriores
obras es una gran idea para rellenar el hueco que falta en un
lanzamiento de este tipo, pero es un recurso del que no se debe
abusar. Eso si, están muy bien interpretados, lo cual me deja un
buen sabor de boca a pesar de que cuatro temas en directo me
parece una mala forma de acabar un obra que, adelanto, es bastante
buena.
Tras la intro “Purgatory”,
nos llega un tema nuevo titulado “Hermetic”,
que comienza con potentes riffs y una batería rapidísima, para
luego continuar con el tema “Crownnymph”,
para mí el mejor del disco, que muestra una mezcla perfecta entre
agresividad Blackmetalera y épicas orquestaciones y un final con
solo de piano. El siguiente tema, “Wolfish
Flower” es bueno, no tan genial como el
anterior, quizá porque se hace corto al durar poco más de dos
minutos, pero es muy bueno, además que posee unas melodías muy
pegadizas y está interpretado de una manera ejemplar. El resto de
material puede resultar algo prescindible: un cover del hit
“Black Metal” de VENOM (estoy verdaderamente harta de
esa banda y ese tema en particular, la verdad, y perdónenme sus
fans), un remix de su tema “Red Blood Runing”
(muy malo, experimental con toques electrónicos que me ha dejado
fría y me ha hecho bajarle puntuación al disco), y los cuatro
temas de directo, de los cuales, como dije anteriormente, yo
prescindiría de dos.
La verdad, este EP podría acercarse a una mejor calificación de
no ser por su mal final, que te deja un mal sabor de boca tras un
inicio de sobresaliente. Pero bueno, os recomiendo material
anterior de la banda, que es bastante interesante.
