Don't get confused, "Flesh For The Devil" isn't Sathanas latest album, this work was originally released in tape format under the Japanese label Sabbathid Records in 2005. The copy I've got in my hands right now, is the re-released version under the Polish label Pagan Records (released as Mcd, LP and Picture Disc)… Well, I assume the most of you have already listened to this underground act before, so a further introduction would be unnecessary. This Mcd consist in six track of hellish Blackened Death Metal, poisoned by strong old school Thrash Metal doses. There's nothing actually new here; thrashing Death Metal riffs, mid paced consistent drumming complemented by muscular bass lines, and a varied and brutal vocal work, ranging from blackish shriek to deathly growls, passing through every shade in between… Even when "Flesh For The Devil" is completely bounded to the style natural limitations, is definitely a varied work; every single track this work contains shines for itself, with its infernal mix of raw musicianship, simple structures and blasphemous attitude... As with their previous works, Sathanas continues here its characteristical lyrical style, always dealing with simple and straight blasphemous, satanic themes, reaffirming their commitment with the old school spirit… This old school feeling is present since the beginning to the end of this mini-album, as a testament of the band's almost 20 years of blasphemous existence… Sathanas isn't reinventing anything here, but their capacity to create glorious compositions is certainly remarkable. "Flesh For The Devil" is definitely a killer piece of old school Metal of the highest calibre, and Sathanas is, in my opinion, one of the finest exponents of this style in today's Metal scene… so, if you enjoy the cruel sound of bands such, Possessed, Hellhammer, Bathory or Kreator, you better run for your copy… (AP)

Na ordem cronológica este é o antepenúltimo material do Sathanas que pra quem ainda nao conhece estao na ativa desde 1988 e este material, que na verdade é um Ep com seis sons é o décimo quarto lançado pela banda (contando todos). O iniciado pela carregada “Invocation” que de fato invoca as forças negras e faz um convite aos bangers a ouvir o Death Metal cadenciado com letras anticristas e satânicas que se segue por todo o material, na seqüencia “Possessed by Blasphemy” que mantém o clima de sua antecessora, em seguida a faixa título “Flesh for the Devil” nesta além de entregar a carne ao demônio o Sathanas acelera um pouco a batida aproximando seu som do Thrash Metal, o quarto e melhor som “Reign of the Antichrist” volta a batida cadenciada com forte presença do baixista e solos de guitarra alternando a riffs cortantes de forma precisa, o penúltimo som “Nocturnal Hell” e o último “Unholy War” completam o Ep, seguindo a cadencia presente na maioria dos sons. Só para acrescentar este material foi lançado originalmente em 2005 com outra capa, porém relançado agora em 2007 com esta capa. (EO)

I shall not cease in any way to be surprised, how many in Poland REALLY METAL, just killing groups! So let's look, and come to a conclusion, that Poland not that other, as the centre of a hell:). Group SATHANAS play present, old-school metal. At listening the following styles were noticed: thrash metal, death metal, black metal. That is, such pleasant symbiosis from the basic infernal styles. Music, as well as is necessary, carries in itself enough of rage, fury, aggression... Fascinating melodies, hellish, killing reefs. Powerful, swinging rhythm-section, interesting solos, good scream vox (and growl). Iron march of death. In SATHANAS music were noticed roots by all of us hotly favourite KREATOR, BATHORY, DESTRUCTION, from death metal I have felt MORBID ANGEL spirit, something also was noticed similar with SATYRICON (some moments in music). About a textual orientation, I think, to speak does not cost, only looking on the names of songs: "Possessed By Blasphemy", "Flesh For The Devil", "Reign Of The Antichrist", "Nocturnal Hell", "Unholy War"... Musical structure is interestingly replaced with death on black or all means together, or on the contrary. The fascinating musical boiler also is up to the top filled by a really charcoal, infernal atmosphere forcing violently to shake hair, which is not present:). Simple, but great with mind and necessary doze of poison reefs. Sound on album has liked, and, how the musical tools (especially fat the allocated bass) are registered... 666 % MUSTHAVE!!!

We reviewed Sathanas music some years ago and we can see now the huge progress that this band has had. The music is extreme, is black metal with old school influences and some thrash and death metal sounds. Here we have riffs created to emphasize aggression and not only speed, combined with fast drumming that leaves plenty of space for the vocals and the riffs. The vocals combine the more agonic voices of black metal with a more growling type of voice that gets the music closer to death metal. The sound of the recording is raw and direct with a mix designed to crush the lsitener with no mercy. A band that continues to evolve into a more aggressive and dark form.

Niedawno pisałem już o tych kultowych bluźniercach, a już mamy zapowiadany jakiś czas temu materiał wydany, a właściwie wznowiony przez naszą rodzimą Pagan Rec. Materiał zawarty na tej płytce to sześć numerów, o wiele lepszych aniżeli zawartość "Entering...". Dziwne to, gdyż pierwotnie opisywana ep, ukazała się przed tamtą płytką. Nie chodzi o materiał bardziej dojrzały, przecież muzycy SATHANAS to starzy wyjadacze, po prostu ogólnie mówiąc jest bardziej zróżnicowany, łatwiej wpada w ucho. "Entering..." wysłuchałem kilka razy, ot, stary dobry death metal. Ten materiał wydaje się być bardziej ciężki, bardziej intensywny, przez cały czas obcowania z nim mam wrażenie, że goni mnie walec drogowy. Diabeł leci ostro z każdego dźwięku, z każdej poszczególnej frazy, oj chciałoby się zobaczyć mistrzów na żywo...Całość utrzymana jest w średnich tempach, z częstymi wypuszczeniami pulsującego jak młot pneumatyczny basu. Wokale jadowite jak jasna cholera, trochę szkoda mi tej grupy, zawsze bowiem stała gdzieś na uboczu tego całego amerykańskiego death metalu, zapatrzonego w zamiatanie paluchami po gryfach instrumentów, często i gęsto gubiącego to, o co w tej muzyce chodzi, czyli KLIMAT. Słuchając "Flesh For the Devil" mam wrażenie, że SATHANAS poszedł tu bardziej ku dokonaniom BATHYM, ale to takie moje osobiste spostrzeżenie i oczywiście nie każdy musi się z tym zgadzać. Osobiście polecam, zarówno maniakom dobrego starego grania, jak i wszystkim znudzonym wirtuozerskimi popisami zadufanych w sobie muzyków z pierwszych stron muzycznych pisemek. Oczywiście mus dla wszelkiej maści zbieraczy tego typu wydawnictw. W końcu to materiał kultowy, bynajmniej dla mnie i basta! Ciekawe jaki będzie nowy album w barwach Pulverised...

Now this is what evil, blasphemous music is supposed to sound like. Sathanas was originally formed in 1988 by Paul Tucker in New Brighton Pennsylvania. The group disbanded a year later only to reform years later to once again reek havoc on an unsuspecting world. Old School death metal that obliterates all that is considered holy to the weak Christian. Excellent production and clear audible vocals make this a special release. At least for me because when I listen to bands that defecate on the bible, I always have to go to the lyric layouts to find out what the fuck they are saying. Not here, I can be blasphemous right along with them! Stellar guitar work, Old School powerful drumming, no tricks, no fancy studio tricks or electronics, just good ol' fashion power. If you are a product of the 80's. Buy this!!!

After nearly 20 years in the music industry US veterans Sathanas continue to attempt to unleash the beasts of hell in the guise of MCD “Flesh For The Devil”. Nowhere near as lethal or as potent as 2005’s brilliant “Entering The Diabolic Unity”, this MCD showcases six tracks of rather linear black/thrash/death metal that will no doubt wet the appetites of you denim-wearing old school fanatics out there, but fails on several levels to even splash mine. With riffs that are flat and powerless, arrangements stale and uninspired and a lyrical concept more comedy than blasphemous, “Flesh For The Devil” does very little to live up to the bands arguably cult status in the extreme music scene. Sounding somewhat rushed, these songs ultimately offer very to keep your interest and do nothing to try and stand out from bands that do it a whole lot better.
That said, the odd good, even great moment does shine through on second track “Possessed By Blasphemy” and “Reign Of The Antichrist” when the band harness a more punchy, in-your-face and atmospheric approach that suits this material so much better, even if it does only last for a moment. Not to write Sathanas off just yet, this writer still lives in hope that their upcoming full-length “Crowned Infernal” will bring back the power, might and blasphemy that made albums such as “Entering The Diabolic Unity” so amazing in the first place, and will show the world that the old ones are still the best ones. SATHANAS : vous avouerez que c’est tout de meme un nom ultime pour un groupe de Metal ! Pas vraiment reconnue sur notre territoire, cette formation américaine menée par le charismatique Paul s’est néanmoins formée en 1988 et n’a jamais été aussi active qu’actuellement.
L’offrande sonore en question (en effet : « Flesh For The Devil » est son nom) nous est proposée sous la forme d’un Ep. Il n’aura pas échappé aux amateurs pointus d’Underground extreme (ça marche aussi a l’envers : les amateurs extremes d’Underground pointu ; « leather ‘n’ spikes attitude » oblige …) que ces enregistrements sont déja sortis il y a deux ans au format cassette sur le tres confidentiel et ésotérique label japonais Sabbathid Records.
Venons-en au fait : « Flesh For The Devil » c’est 6 titres dans la plus pure tradition de SATHANAS. C’est-a-dire un proto Metal extreme monstrueux et terriblement blasphématoire. Si les réalisations de SARCOPHAGO, POSSESSED et autres BLASPHEMY ont marqué votre existence, vous ne devriez pas rester indifférent aux vibrations primitives proposées par ces démons américains. Une simple évocation des titres des morceaux suffit pour etre plongé dans l’ambiance : « Invocation » (devenu un véritable hymne du groupe), « Possessed By Blasphemy », « Reign Of The Antichrist », « Unholy War » … ça se passe de commentaires ! Pour couronner le tout, SATHANAS nous gratifie d’une mortuaire reprise de SLAUGHTER : « Nocturnal Hell » !
C’est vraiment une sage initiative de la part de Pagan Records que de proposer une réédition de ces enregistrements restés peu connus jusqu’alors (en pour cause : 300 malheureuses cassettes pressées en Asie …). Ce Mcd est orné d’une pochette qui ne dépareille pas avec le contenu musical. Quoi que je préférais de loin la premiere illustration réalisée par le légendaire Chris Moyen national.
A chaque fois que ce disque tourne sur ma platine, je passe vingt tres bonnes minutes ! Ce Mcd a l’avantage d’allier savoir-faire « old-school » ancestral et spontanéité de la rage adolescente ! L’esprit vindicatif des 80’s dans sa forme presque intacte.
La note est peut etre un peu surévaluée, mais je dois avouer adorer ce groupe, son attitude et la gueule de ses réalisations. Amis « Die-Hard », cette sortie vous est dédiée … Et la consécration serait totale si cette offrande pouvait voir le jour au format vinyle ! Tout un programme …

Nima: De Amerikaanse Sathanas timmert (inclusief een pauze) al 25 jaar aan de weg met hun satanische creativiteit, heeft een aantal redelijke platen op zak en heeft inmiddels een bijna cultstatus in de underground. Het lijkt er voorlopig ook geen eind te komen aan het carriere van dit trio.
Voorgaand aan de later dit jaar te verschijnen plaat 'Crowned Infernal' brengt de Poolse Pagan Records nu deze mini uit. De nihilistische death metal van deze heren heeft door de jaren heen niets aan kracht ingeboet en ligt zeker lekker in het gehoor. De simpele, toch solide, gitaar riffs klinken lekker dreigend en men bewijst dat het ook zonder keyboards en orkest mogelijk is om een donkere sfeer neer te zetten. Mede dankzij het gekrijs van Paul Tucker (denk maar aan het stemgeluid van Natterfrost) heeft de muziek een heerlijk black metal randje en komt behoorlijk "evil" over. Je kunt natuurlijk gaan zeuren dat alles al een keer eerder is gedaan en dat er talloze soortgelijke bandjes rondlopen, maar hoewel men geenszins vernieuwend bezig is, vind ik de muziek van deze heren vele malen kwaadaardiger dan duizend black metal bandjes bij elkaar. Ook is men wat betreft de productie met de tijd meegegaan en heeft dit schijfje een heerlijk geluid meegekregen, waardoor de nummer lekker uit de speakers knallen. Veel bands kunnen hier nog wat van leren.
Deze zes nummers tellende mini is dan ook een mooie toevoeging aan de collectie van degene die satanische old school death, black en thrash metal een warm hartje toedragen. Kom maar op met die volgende langspeler.

Gdy dostałem to wydawnictwo do ręki, pomyślałem, że będę miał do czynienia z kolejnym młodym, satanistycznym zespołem black metalowym, który chce grać najbrutalniej, najszybciej i w ogóle naj... Tymczasem okazuje się, że Sathanas to czołowy przedstawiciel amerykańskiego black metalu, będący na scenie od ponad dwudziestu lat. Tamtejsza krytyka określa zespół jako najlepszy na zachodniej półkuli... Hmmm.
Po przesłuchaniu „Flesh for the devil” skłonny jestem stwierdzić, że tamtejsza scena black metalowa musi być dosyć mizerna. Nie chodzi o to, czy omawiany tutaj krążek jest zły czy też nie, ale spodziewałem się czegoś szybszego, czegoś nawiązującego bardziej do szkoły skandynawskiej. Tymczasem otrzymaliśmy bardzo oldschoolową wersję black metalu, utrzymaną raczej w wolnych tempach, opartą na sabbathowych riffach, nawiązującą odrobinę do klasyków na miarę Venom czy Celtic Frost. Skrzek wokalisty jest bardzo zrozumiały, przypominający odrobinę Toxine z Witchery, tu i ówdzie pojawia się growling, ale stanowi on raczej drobne uzupełnienie.
Kompozycje cechują się dużą prostotą, muzyka jest rytmiczna i chwytliwa, co trzeba zaliczyć zespołowi na plus. Zaskakująco dobre są także solówki, świetnie ubarwiające kompozycje. Brzmienie krążka jest surowe, ale każdy instrument jest słyszany bardzo dobrze.
„Flesh for the devil” nie odkrywa niczego nowego, ale muszę przyznać, że przyjemnie się tego słucha i nie widzę powodów, aby przyczepić się do czegokolwiek.

SATHANAS is a band that has been playing its traditional death/black metal the same way for many, many years. Of course, one can hear some differences comparing with such their old albums as for example "Armies Of Charon". The drumming isn't so much sluggish like before and there are more growled vocals for instance. But SATHANAS music is still simple and very steady, I mean not so chaotic as e.g. Norwegian black or American complex brutal death metal. It's more into Acheron or Crucifier tunes, if you know what I mean, and I do like it. Especially some cool choruses ("Invocation") and riffs ("Reign Of The Antichrist") which are pretty catchy. For dessert there is a cover song from Canadian SLAUGHTER - do you need something more?!
For old school die-hards only! So buy it and bang your head for SAT(H)AN(AS)!

Meine Ausgangsfrage soll hier sein, wer mir eigentlich nach erstmaligem Hören glauben würde, dass dieses Werk aus dem neuen Jahrtausend stammt. Richtig! Wahrscheinlich niemand. Für die alteingesessen Blackened Death Metaller SATHANAS ist 2007 ein aktives Jahr. So bringen die Jungs nicht nur ein Re-Release dieser MCD über Pagan Records heraus, folglich wird auch noch ein komplett neues Studio Album über Pulverised Records durch die Produktionshallen laufen. Nun, ich muss gestehen, dass ich bisher noch nicht mit der Musik der drei Amis in Kontakt kam und war dementsprechend reichlich überrascht, als ich Statements wie „Die beste Black/Death Kapelle aus den USA“ las. Wie ich später erfahren durfte, so steckt zumindest im Kern dieser Aussage ein kleines Fünkchen Wahrheit.
Natürlich hängt es hierbei schwerwiegend von der Definition des Wortes „gut“ im Bezug auf Musik ab. Zielt man also auf hohe technische Spielereien auf höchster Geschwindigkeit, so wird es SATHANAS sicher nicht einmal in die Mittelklasse schaffen. Diese warten vielmehr mit lang vermissten Eigenschaften auf, die man als Widererkennungswert, Charme und Spielspaß bezeichnen könnte. Salopp gesagt, sie sind einfach Old-School as Fuck! Dieser so oft missbrauchte Ausspruch trifft hier wie die Faust aufs Auge. Mein zweiter Gedanke, der Verwunderung folgend, belief sich darauf, mir den Kopf darüber zu zerbrechen, wie man sich denn so was Heute noch trauen kann. Wie kann man solch simple Riffs wieder aus dem verstaubtesten Keller heraufholen und in einer Produktion einweichen die dem Fetischisten glatt gebügelter Soundhemden die Zehennägel aufwickeln wird? Wie man sieht, man kann!
Sollte man die Vocals einordnen, so würde ich die Grunzattacken irgendwo in die frühen Neunziger stecken. Das überwiegend keifende Organ dagegen hat deutlich spürbare Anleihen eines Abbath von IMMORTAL. Auf die einzelnen Songs brauche ich hier gar nicht weiter eingehen. Diese befinden sich allesamt im groovenden Mid-Tempo Bereich, dies aber ohne zu langweilen, da die Riffs immerzu schnell ins Ohr gehen und einen wenigstens mit etwas Kopf wippen beschäftigen.
Ist man also dummerweise in der Sanduhr stecken geblieben oder schafft man es gekonnt die Uhr umzudrehen und wieder in alte Zeiten zurückzukehren? Für mich klar Letzteres, denn das Wichtigste bei diesem bewussten Rückschritt ist die Atmosphäre und den Charme der alten Zeit unbeschädigt aus der brüchigen Kiste zu holen, und das haben SATHANAS mit „Flesh for the Devil“ meines Erachtens mit Bravur gemeistert. 8/10 Punkten

Having been around in some form or other since 1988, its hardly surprising that the sound of Pennsylvanian band Sathanas is pretty old school. Not that this should put you off this six track mini album, because it is still as relevant a sound in 2007 as it was 19 years ago. As far as I know this is the bands first release for Polish label Pagan Records, and a colossal slice of deathly thrash it is. It is as you would expect unpolished which adds to the overall charm. It may be the current trend to add more technical flourishes to the Death Metal formula, but thankfully Sathanas know what they are good at and stick to their roots and have created a fine set of mid paced thrash infused tracks that simply grab you from start to finish. Strongest tracks for me are the groove laden ‘Invocation’ which kicks off the album in monumental style. This is closely followed by ‘Reign Of The Antichrist’ which again has a groove to it and is a fine example of just how good this band can be when they put their collective minds to creating their fine blend of Blackened Death Thrash. Nothing new. Nothing overtly cutting edge, but sometimes less is more. ‘Flesh For The Devil’ is a great release and one that should be everyone’s
collection.

Wiecie, czasem kiedy trafia w moje łapy jakiś mini album, cieszę się że mam okrojony czasowo materiał, bo nie muszę znosić kilkudziesięciu minut niestrawnych dźwięków. W przypadku MCD Sathanas sytuacja jest dokładnie odwrotna: materiału chce się słuchać w kółko, i po tym jak mija 6 utworów, palec automatycznie ląduje na przycisku z napisem "play". Sathanas to grupa jak dla mnie perfekcyjna, jeśli chodzi o diabelskie mieszanie Death i Black Metalu. Materiał jest świetnie zrealizowany (brudne, ale jednocześnie bardzo czytelne brzmienie), do tego kompozycje są na tyle dobrze wyważone, że ani nie czujemy się jak na szkoleniu dla ambitnych muzyków gdzie każdy przeżywa nagłą fascynację dokonaniami Voivod, ani też dawka żywiołu i ekstremy nie jest na tyle zabójcza, że już nie wiemy czego tak naprawdę słuchamy. Ale w końcu to Sathanas, prawda? Grupa jakby nie było blisko 20 lat poruszająca się w podziemnym Metalowym świecie, z całkiem potężnym bagażem doświadczenia i praoma silnymi produkcjami na koncie. Na szczęście panowie mają w dupie panujące trendy, i nagrali ponownie kawał rewelacyjnej old-schoolowej stali. Z niecierpliwością czekam na pełny album, a "Flesh For The Devil" polecam z czystym sumieniem wszystkim maniakom dobrego Metalu, i wielbicielom, hmm, Metalu w Metalu. Ocena 9/10

No proszę, najnowszy Sathanas w Pagan Records. Przyznam szczerze, że dawno nie zaglądałem w progi jakby nie patrzeć jednej z najlepszych wytwórni metalowych w Polsce. Chyba najwyższa pora to zmienić. Amerykański Sathanas właśnie pod pogańską banderą wydaje swój najnowszy mini album "Flesh For The Devil". Obejmuje on sześć kompozycji siarczanu siarki siarczanej, zagranego tradycyjnie po death, thrashowej pięciolinii, czyli do samego tytułu możemy dodać "another tasty...Flesh for The Devil". Przecież trudno oczekiwać po takich klasykach jak Nun Slaughter lub Sathanas, czy chociażby nasz Throneum większej zmiany dotychczasowego stylu. Po kilku wydawnictwach kolejna płyta staję się muzyką przewidywalną, oczywistą, lecz ta posłuszność naszym oczekiwaniom jest tym, czego ja chcę słuchać. Jeszcze ciepły sześciopak jest zbiorem utworów, których same tytuły rozszczepiają gębę od ucha do ucha. Na dźwięk pierwszego "Invocation" rozbrzmiewa mieszanka death thrashu z prawie dwudziestoletnim doświadczeniem, więc trudno tu o jakieś półśrodki, niedopowiedzenia, miejsca, które mogą pozbawić nas degustacji znakomitym brzmieniem i klasycznymi aranżacjami. Jest to płyta dosyć spójna, praktycznie każdy utwór to kolejny hicior, a jak same hity, to nie obędzie się bez darcia papy do refrenu, pokazywania diabełków i machania banią. Tak należy przyjąć i dalej słuchać "Flesh For The Devil" innej opcji nie będzie i chyba nikt się o nią nie prosi. Sathanas przedstawia pewną wartość, która niestety powoli staje się gatunkiem zagrożonym i chociażby z tego powodu warto odkryć walory podane niemalże na tacy. Stanowią one klasykę skomponowaną z pasją i oddaniem death, thrashowej scenie.
